Frequently Asked Questions

Can I charge an EV from a normal powerpoint?
Yes — any EV can charge from a standard 10A powerpoint using the included portable charger. It charges at ~2.4kW (about 10-15km of range per hour). This is fine for overnight charging if you drive less than 60-80km per day. For heavier usage, a dedicated 7kW wall charger is recommended.
How long does it take to charge at home?
From a standard powerpoint (2.4kW): 20-30 hours for a full charge. From a 7kW wall charger: 6-10 hours. From a 22kW 3-phase charger: 2-4 hours. Most people charge overnight and rarely need a full charge — topping up from 20% to 80% takes about 40% of these times.
What's the cheapest time to charge?
If you're on a time-of-use tariff, off-peak rates (typically 10pm-7am) can be half the peak rate. Most EV chargers and cars have built-in timers to schedule charging. Even cheaper: charge during the day from solar panels — you only pay the opportunity cost of lost feed-in (5-9c/kWh vs 28-42c/kWh).
Do I need a dedicated EV charger?
Not strictly, but a dedicated charger (7kW) is recommended if you drive more than 50km/day or want faster, more convenient charging. Installation costs $1,000-$2,000 including wiring. The charger itself is $600-$1,500. Some electricity retailers offer free chargers with new EV plans.
